New Year: New Wardrobe by a Personal Stylist

My personal Snob Box! Got a sequins top, poufy skirt,  golden clutch, earrings and necklace.

There is nothing better for a lady to begin her new year with some new and exciting outfits for the upcoming year. Now, if you are like me and A) usually don’t have the time to shop and/or B) end up the buying the same style clothing, you should try Snob Box!

What is Snob Box? Well, Snobbox basically is a personal styling service that sends you a box of 5 items (usually one complete set that includes a top, bottom, earrings, necklace and bag) that is personally picked up for you by a professional stylist. This service enables one to experiment with looks, latest trends, and styles all in the comfort of your house.

How does it work?

  1. Go to the website and fill out a quick style questionnaire about yourself. The service allows you to choose a price point as well for the box with the basic box and all 5 items being between Rupees 3000-4500.
  2. Select a date of when you want your box and wait to be surprised.
  3. When the box arrives, try on all the items and keep what you want and return what you don’t. The best part? The courier/shipment company comes back and picks up the box so you never have to step out of the house.

I ordered my first Snobbox a few weeks ago. I was so elated to see that this service had finally started in India, and I wasn’t disappointed. I appreciated that my stylist actually called me to talk about my personal style and preferences, and for the most part got my box quite right. I kept 3 out of 5 items.

The only draw back to this service was that I sent a few emails to the main email address regarding my return and never got a reply. It wasn’t  a pressing issue so I let it go, but it is something to think about for this startup as it expands to new cities (they current service Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune & Delhi).

Receiving my Snob Box was like giving myself a gift 🙂 I look forward to trying their services again when I need to add some new pieces to my wardrobe.

Food Trucks in Pune

Standard

One of my favorite shows on Food Network is Eat Street; and I just sit there and drool over all the greasy, juicy and creative food served. The show always leaves me hungry and raiding my kitchen fridge. Over the past few years, food trucks have been popping up all across the globe. The food truck trend was just catching up in Cleveland before I made the move to India. But, one might say that India was probably one of the first countries to have food trucks because we have many vendors serving delicious food through their mini stalls or thellas (as we call them in Hindi). I think what makes the current scenario of food trucks stand apart is that most of them are run by budding entrepreneurs and culinary artists who set out to serve new, inventive and delicious dishes to the more food conscious and aware customer.

The awesome guys at Street Meat

So, again thanks to social media and how its become the new way to hear about new and upcoming places, I heard about “Street Meat.” I stalked their Instagram page and realised that they were officially launching their food truck this weekend with a simple menu and pay what you think the food is worth offer. Hello! What is not to like about this? I couldn’t contain my excitement and texted my husband at work about this. I told him that we “have to” try this place and he, being he, simply agreed.

So come Sunday, we strapped the baby in the car seat, hopped into the car, braved the mini downpour and crazy traffic and found ourselves at this neat little food truck. Street Meat’s menu was of the following 1) Thai Stuffed Gol Guppas (pani puris) 2) Goan Chorizo Bra Pao 3) Cajun Chicken Pita Wraps and 4) Korean Pulled Pork Burger. The Indian twist on these international cuisines was refreshing and mouth watering. We ordered one of each and couldn’t stop raving from the first bite. Yum, yum, yum!  The two partners running the place were friendly and nice to chit chat with and that made the entire experience more fun. For my first official food truck experience in Pune, I couldn’t have been more satisfied.

This weekend was a foodilicous (yes, I made this word up) weekend for me. From stuffing face at a family friend’s wedding to trying out a brand new food truck joint in Pune, the weekend left me feeling happy, satiated, adventurous, and a bit more snug is usually good fitting jeans.

Monday Mornings

Standard

So here is my attempt at doing a Monday morning post. With a newborn there isn’t a set routine, the morning is just guided based on my daughter’s needs and wants. One thing that doesn’t seem to change much is our wake up time, my two month old daughter starts squirming in bed around 5:30 AM (even before sunrise). I usually try nursing her to put her back to sleep for another hour;

Morning stroll

Morning stroll

somedays this works and somedays like today she absolutely refuses to go back to sleep.

On Mondays, my husband has his workout, so I am usually the only one awake in the house at this odd time. I was feeling a bit sick over the weekend and had missed my walks; today I felt that a nice walk and some fresh air would do me and the baby some good. So I put on my fabulous Ring Sling and headed out for a good 30 min stroll.

After that it’s usually catch up time for the family. My daughter plays around for a good half an hour to 45 mins while I get all her things ready for the day-diapers, cloths folded, water boiled, etc. I do have the luxury of having help that enables me to focus just on taking care of my baby.

Reading Time

Reading Time

My husband leaves for work around 9 and then starts my alone time with the baby. Today we started our time together with reading “Goodnight Moon”; she just looks at the colors and I am happy with that 🙂 I really hope she too loves reading as much as I do. Up next was making sure she had a full tummy.

imageAfter that I asked my bai (help who I call Didi or elder sister) to help me cut my daughter’s nails as it’s something I am terrified of doing. We sang songs and “talked” to my baby through this process to distract her.

imageWith a full belly and newly manicured nails, my baby was in play mode. I just laid her on my bed and entertained her with many of her toys. This got us till around 11, when she was hungry again (newborns get hungry quite frequently). After a feed it was nap time again where she slept peacefully on my chest. It was a best close to an eventful and beautiful morning.

Food Destinations: Pune

Food Destinations: Pune

I love food, it might not seem like it but I do. It sometimes is the one and only thing that makes me wake up at 5:30 and go for a run; the thought that I will be able to devour my favorite food later. Having been in the city also known as Oxford of the East for almost two years now-I have a list of places that are my go-to favorites. This might help those who are traveling to the city or might even open up options for those who have been in the city for a while but are looking for some new places to try.

1) Little Italy La Pizzeria.

It was the first restaurant I visited with my husband, back in the days of long distance relationship. May be that’s why it holds a special place in my heart. But the food is to die for as well. One has to try the Pasta Barbeseca in pink sauce (which is a mixture of white and red) and the Mexican Pizza. I love their nachos as well. The restaurant only serves vegetarian food, but never have I even once missed my meat during my meals here.

2) Kareem’s Chicken Kati Roll

Well, isn’t a sit-down dinner type of place; it’s more like you have finish your dish just standing outside. But nonetheless, Kareem’s has the best chicken egg wrap in the whole world. I have tried chicken kati rolls (wraps) at other places but nothing ever comes close. Some visitors might we weary of eating at this street joint, but sometimes you just have to risk the chance of a bad stomach for an amazing meal. (The one in Camp is the best branch)

3) Independence Brewing Company

This is probably the newest addition to my list and it made its way to my list because of the beer and not food. Micro breweries are just starting in India, and fortunately Pune is becoming host to several of them. Independence Brewing Company has a rustic interior, which I love, along with amazing beer. I have only been here twice (not bad considering it only opened back in January) but have loved, loved, loved the beer. I would highly recommend this for a girls night out or a place to catch up with friends.

4) 1000 Oaks

Another nice hangout spot in Pune is 1000 Oaks or TOaks. My husband tells me that is one of oldest lounges in Pune, where infamous musicians used to visit. All the times I have been there, they have the same playlist, but it doesn’t take away from the charm of this hidden gem. The Bar Men’s Pitcher is one to definitely try-go for the original and not the other flavours. In terms of food, the butter chicken and garlic mushrooms are always on my to-order list.

I am sure this list will grow and change as I continue to explore more around this city that I am starting to call home 🙂

Teach for India: Take 2…Year 2

Two weeks of school complete!! YAY!!! Week 1 was good, but week 2 was a struggle. My co-fellows and I were constantly saying how our kids are getting to us and we are to them and school has only started. My thoughts take me back to the exactly the same time last year when I pretty much left my class crying. That Thursday is forever etched in my mind.

Coming back to the present, while planning my week I could not think of a better way to end it. I had my class do a project inspired by the artwork of Henry Matisse. For the next twenty minutes my kids and I probably had the best time we had this entire week. Cutting paper, thinking about designs, helping each other and making something beautiful.

Matisse said that his art really kept him going during the tough days. And right now I can’t agree more. Seeing the kids get so excited and enjoying this activity just made this tough week worthwhile. I can’t wait to see what these kids come back with on Monday!
